The Story Behind Kinship Collective

Sometimes the most meaningful ideas begin with the simplest conversations.

For Kinship Collective co-founders Saskia and Raphael, it was a coffee shared between friends and a conversation about community, connection and the people who so often go unseen that sparked the beginning of something special.

Although their paths to Kinship Collective were different, they were shaped by the same belief: everyone deserves to feel connected, valued and supported.

Saskia's Journey

For Saskia, the journey began more than ten years ago when her family emigrated from South Africa to Australia. While the move brought exciting opportunities, it also meant leaving behind parents, grandparents and the everyday moments that make family life so precious. Over the years, she watched her parents grow older through a screen and said a final goodbye to her grandmother via a video call, experiences that highlighted the heartache of being separated by distance.

After settling in Torquay, Saskia unexpectedly found those missing connections through friendships with local seniors. One friendship, in particular, changed her perspective forever. She realised that something as simple as sharing a cup of coffee, helping with the shopping, or accompanying someone on an outing could transform not only a day but a person's entire sense of belonging. It also made her reflect on her own parents overseas and how comforting it would be to know they had someone offering the same companionship and support.

Raphael's Journey

Raphael's journey was different but equally personal. After spending much of his career in business, turning 50 prompted him to reflect on what truly mattered. Rather than continuing to build organisations, he felt called to invest his time in building relationships. His work as a support worker reinforced that decision, showing him that the greatest impact often comes through highly personalised, one-on-one support.

For Raphael, connection is everything. He has seen first-hand how helping someone get out into the community, revisit hobbies, enjoy meaningful conversation or simply spend time with another person can restore confidence, purpose and joy. Inspired by his late mother, whose warmth and compassion as a nurse touched countless lives, he believes genuine relationships are at the heart of exceptional care.

When Saskia and Raphael shared their stories over coffee, they discovered they had the same vision. They believed there was room for a different kind of support service, one built not around schedules or checklists, but around people.

That conversation became Kinship Collective.

Today, Kinship Collective provides personalised companionship, assistance with everyday tasks, social outings and tailored support for seniors and people needing an extra helping hand across Geelong, the Surf Coast and surrounding communities, with outings extending throughout regional Victoria and Melbourne when desired.

At its heart, however, Kinship Collective is about far more than practical support. It is about creating genuine friendships, encouraging independence and ensuring that no one feels forgotten or alone.

Success for Kinship Collective isn't measured by growth or profit. It is measured by the smile after a morning coffee, the confidence to venture out again, the stories shared during a drive, the friendships formed, and the knowledge that someone always has another person in their corner.

Because sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer one another is simply our time.
